XYLITOL-FREE Dental Water Additive Xylitol is an artificial sweetener commonly found in sugar-free products, such as sugar-free chewing gum and candy. In dogs, xylitol ingestion can stimulate an insulin surge in the bloodstream, causing hypoglycemia, and can even cause hepatic necrosis if a large amount is consumed.
Xylitol can be found in several veterinary dental water additives because it has antibacterial properties in the mouth so it is used to reduce periodontal disease. Aquadent® by Virbac and Breathalyser Plus® from Ceva are examples of veterinary dental water additives that contain xylitol.
However, at high doses xylitol can be toxic to dogs, and it can be difficult to regulate how much water dogs will drink, especially in a multi-pet household or in cases where a dog may have polydypsia from an underlying disease or medication. Additionally, there is a danger of a dog finding a bottle and chewing it up, drinking a substantial quantity of the undiluted product could easily be poisoned, depending on the dog’s size. (1)
